As a new brand with all the challenges associated with getting production online, an audience engaged and designing new, functional tools, Kickstarter struck me as being a good opportunity to get some initial orders into the hands of fans.
There do seem to be numerous Kickstarter campaigns run by people that don't know what they are doing, selling products that are not well manufactured.
After years of supplier management, I have a strong personal dislike for the Marketing heavy "Sell first, Produce later" approach. I can assure you our time has been spent on getting the very best manufacturers and materials in the game into our blades!
Due to my own skepticism about Kickstarter, I almost did not go through with it. Now it's all set, we'll see how it goes!
There also appears to be a lot of really low-end products, offered at really high prices which worries me a bit, as our products are at the high end of quality. It's a concern that any affiliation with Kickstarter may imply low quality.
As you should already be well aware; our blades are made 100% in the UK (at the time of writing. This may change to include Italy over the coming weeks). With the sheaths being completely hand made by our founder himself in Kent, UK. Our product is anything but 'low-end'.
For those not familiar with what Kickstarter is; simply put it is a popular platform which can (in theory) be used to get eyes on your 'campaign' and those eyes that like it, can pledge funds towards your 'goal'.
BMC's goal is to get the Chopra Machete launched and into the hands of people that need a great survival machete.
The Chopra Machete OD's should sling strap is very adjustable and provides a great way to carry the blade.
As our machetes are manufactured in the developed world by professional cutlers, using the best components available to us, we appreciate the price required for quality might be tough for some to afford. But do not fret! If you can't quite swing for one of the top 'rewards' including a Chopra, then smaller pledges are also available which include some cool custom BMC accessories.
I must confess that this Kickstarter campaign is also the cheapest price the Chopra will ever be offered at with a current standard RRP of £300. For £295 on Kickstarter, you'll get the standard Chopra Machete with ALL our accessories currently offered in the shop. That is a total value of well over £400!
Someone smarter than me once said "It is better to ship". Now that is actually not the most profound phrase I have ever heard, but its simplicity is valuable in communicating it's message. The meaning I draw from it is - don't keep wasting time tweaking things that don't matter, as at the end of the day, shipping a product which is already designed, tested and ready, is better than endlessly postponing it's release.
